Why you started riding a bike: All through high school I was big into weight lifting and working out at the gym, trying to get massive. After my first year of college in 2010, I started looking for a fun way to add some cardio over the summer. I bought a cheap road bicycle in Isla Vista, and started riding up Old San Marcos Road, just 3 miles from my house. It took me all summer to make it to the top, but since first strapping into those pedals, I’ve been hooked.

Why you started racing a bike: I’ve always been a very competitive person. I have a brother 3 years younger than me, and he and I have always pushed each other- wrestling, weight lifting, running, any kind of physical activity really. Naturally, when I starting riding, it was only a matter of time before I tried to race. I did an offseason criterium at, like 7:30am one Sunday in Compton and haven’t slowed down since.

What do you love most about racing: I love criteriums. I love the speed, I love the aggression, I love the strategy. But the thing I love the most is pushing myself beyond what I perceive to be my limit. I love being right at that edge; at that tunnel-visioned, burning lungs, heart in your throat edge, and then pushing through that.

Best memory from racing: My best memories of racing were the 10 days I spent doing the Tour of America’s Dairyland in Wisconsin. They were not only the HARDEST crits I have ever done, but the most fun as well. There were always huge crowds cheering the racers through the main streets of these small country towns. The local communities really supported the race and turned out in huge numbers to watch. They just had the best atmosphere of any races I have ever done.

Worst memory from racing: I don’t have a specific worst memory, but from racing, I have the sound of cracking and splintering carbon engrained into my memory. I’ve been lucky in the crashes I’ve been involved in, but you never forget that noise – skidding tires, shouting, and then the crack of carbon as someone goes down. There’s nothing quite like it.

Favorite Race: My favorite race is the Lompoc Criterium in the 805 Series, closely followed by the San Rafael Twilight Criterium. Both really hard races on fun courses that bring out some great spectators!
